At least one Orange County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man off of Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton on Tuesday, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports, citing authorities.
The driver of a white car then pulled up near a deputy who was conducting a routine traffic stop and told the officer he'd committed a crime and was armed, according to the CHP. The incident took place around noon close to the Las Pulgas off-ramp, the Union Trib reported.
That deputy radioed for backup, and dozens of deputies, CHP officers, Border Patrol agents and Camp Pendleton authorities responded, the paper said.
That triggered an hours-long stand off with the man in the white car that ended at around 1:20 p.m.. That's when Orange County deputies — and possibly an officer with another agency — shot and killed the man.
It's not yet clear what might have compelled officers to fire.
